About FNCE Academic Press

FNCE Academic Press was founded in 2017 at the initiative of Professor Piotr Kwiatkiewicz. From the beginning, its primary mission has been to publish peer-reviewed academic works and provide a platform for presenting research results from various academic disciplines. In its nine years of activity, the Press has published more than 470 works. Its output consists primarily of academic monographs, both single-author and multi-author.

An important milestone in the Press’s development came in 2019, when it was included in the list of publishers issuing peer-reviewed academic monographs. In the list announced on 17 December 2019, FNCE Academic Press was classified at Level I. It retained this position in the subsequent lists announced in 2020 and 2021.

Publishing profile

FNCE Academic Press specializes in publishing peer-reviewed academic monographs, primarily in the social sciences, security studies, and history.

These areas define the Press’s core profile and the direction in which its catalogue develops. In the social sciences, the Press publishes works addressing political, social, and international issues. A significant part of the catalogue is devoted to security, including national security, international security, and contemporary threats and challenges. The third main area is history, covering research into the history of Poland and world history.

The Press is also open to interdisciplinary projects that bring together these fields of research. Publications are assessed for their academic nature, fit with the Press’s profile, and substantive value. The final publishing decision depends on the outcome of the peer-review process.

Publishing Board
and International Academic Board

The work of FNCE Academic Press is supported by two separate expert bodies: the Publishing Board and the International Academic Board. They provide ongoing expert and academic support and make it possible to consult representatives of the academic community on the Press’s development. The Publishing Board helps shape the Press’s activities and provides opinions on its publishing plans. The Academic Board provides broader academic support, helping develop the Press’s profile and maintain standards of academic work. Both bodies serve advisory and consultative functions. They do not replace reviewers or assume responsibility for reviewing individual publications. The current membership of the Publishing Board and the Academic Board is presented separately on the Press’s website.

A new operating model

A significant organizational change took place in August 2023, when FNCE Academic Press became part of FNCE Publishing Group. The model adopted at that time clearly separated academic work and scholarly decisions from the organizational, technical, and business management of the publishing process.

The Press retained its own identity and the responsibilities of a specialist academic publisher. It is responsible for shaping its academic profile, selecting publications, organizing and supervising peer review, making scholarly decisions, and ensuring compliance with academic standards and publication ethics.

FNCE Publishing Group, in turn, provides comprehensive support for the process that takes an approved publishing project through to a finished publication and its release into circulation. This includes organizing editorial and technical work, production, promotion, sales, and distribution. The Group is also responsible for the economic and commercial aspects of the publishing process, including organizing sales, working with partners and distributors, and activities related to the market performance of publications.

Preparing a publication

Once the academic part of the publishing process is complete, the Group organizes preparation of the publication. This includes, in particular, language and technical editing, proofreading, typesetting and page layout, preparation of illustrative materials, cover design, and production file preparation. Depending on the publication, the Group coordinates print and electronic editions and other technical work required before production and distribution.

Production and technical support

FNCE Publishing Group organizes the production process, including preparing books for printing, working with suppliers, and producing print runs. For electronic publications, it prepares the appropriate formats and places them in digital distribution channels.

The Group also provides technical and administrative support for publications, including publishing identification and preparation of the data needed for books to circulate through commercial and library systems.

Distribution

One of the most important results of the model introduced in 2023 was a significant expansion of the distribution options for FNCE Academic Press publications.

FNCE Publishing Group sells books through its own online bookstore, Allegro, and Empik, and also works with a wholesale network and external distributors. This helps publications reach bookshops and institutional customers.

The Group is responsible for book storage, order processing and shipping, as well as digital distribution. It also makes selected publications available through Open Access, providing free access to their full electronic versions.

This system combines direct sales, online platforms, wholesale distribution, electronic publications, and Open Access.

Promotion and business activities

FNCE Publishing Group is responsible for the business side of the publishing process, including sales and promotion of publications and the development of channels for reaching readers. Promotional activities include presenting new titles, preparing information materials, communicating about publications, and supporting their presence in sales and distribution channels. The Group also manages institutional cooperation related to the delivery of publishing processes.

This division of responsibilities allows FNCE Academic Press to focus on academic work, the substantive quality of publications, and peer review, while the Group provides shared editorial, technical, production, commercial, promotional, and distribution support.
